High-Integrity Mechanical Handling for the Defence Sector

Lily Mckeown

March 23, 2026

As global tensions increase and overseas defence activity continues to rise, the resilience and capability of the UK defence supply chain has never been more critical. From advanced manufacturing facilities to naval operations and testing environments, defence organisations rely on precise, safe and reliable material handling to keep vital programmes moving.

At SCX Specialist Handling Solutions, we engineer specialist cranes and mechanical handling systems designed specifically for safety-critical defence applications. Our solutions help manufacturers, shipyards and defence facilities move sensitive and high-value assets with absolute confidence.

What role do we play?

Mechanical handling plays a critical role across the defence sector, supporting operations in environments ranging from advanced manufacturing and assembly facilities to naval vessels, maintenance depots and training centres.

SCX has developed specialist handling systems for a wide range of defence applications, ensuring equipment can be moved, positioned and maintained safely, efficiently and with complete control always.

Trusted by the UK’s leading defence primes

Trusted by the UK’s leading defence primes, SCX is one of the few companies able to design and manufacture compliant specialist crane systems, providing the precision and reliability that keep defence operations moving.

Our engineering expertise supports facilities responsible for the manufacture, assembly, testing and maintenance of complex defence equipment.

Working to strict standards such as JSP467 and JSP482, our systems are designed to meet the highest levels of compliance required within defence infrastructure.

This capability allows us to deliver solutions where safety, control and system integrity are absolutely critical.

Defence Manufacturing Facilities

Modern defence programmes rely on highly efficient manufacturing processes where equipment must be moved quickly and accurately.

For example, SCX developed a semi-automated monorail handling system for the aerospace production line. The system features 38 synchronised trolleys moving around the factory floor, helping increase production output from one aircraft per week to one per day.

Such systems demonstrate how intelligent mechanical handling can significantly improve production efficiency while maintaining strict safety controls.

Naval Handling Systems

Operating lifting systems at sea introduces unique engineering challenges, including vessel movement, harsh environments and strict safety certification.

SCX supplied multiple handling systems for the Queen Elizabeth-class aircraft carriers, supporting operations from cargo handling through to aircraft servicing.

These systems feature: Captive anti-uplift designs for rough sea conditions, Independent certification through Lloyd’s Register, Detailed structural calculations and verification.

This ensures safe and reliable lifting even in challenging maritime environments.

Specialist Training and Testing Systems

Beyond manufacturing and maintenance, defence facilities require advanced equipment for training and simulation environments.

SCX developed handling systems for Helicopter Underwater Egress Training (HUET) simulators. These systems safely simulate aircraft ditching scenarios and include:

  • Controlled dunking and rotation functions
  • Battery backup for rapid recovery in power loss scenarios
  • Certification for man-riding applications

This allows training providers to deliver realistic emergency scenarios while maintaining strict safety controls.

Supporting the Defence Supply Chain

As defence programmes evolve and production demands increase, the need for highly engineered handling systems will only grow.

SCX continues to support the UK defence sector by delivering:

  • Bespoke specialist cranes
  • Automated handling systems
  • Naval lifting equipment
  • Compliance-driven munitions handling solutions
  • Long-term maintenance and support

By combining deep engineering expertise with decades of experience in high-integrity sectors, we help defence organisations move complex assets faster, safer and with complete confidence.

This integrated approach ensures reliable, repeatable operation even in the most demanding environments.

Safety and Compliance at the Core

Across all defence applications, safety remains the defining principle behind every SCX system.

Our solutions incorporate multiple layers of protection including:
