Nuclear Masts

Unlike cranes, nuclear masts provide the optimum solution for tool manipulation due to their rigid construction and the stability this provides when external forces act on the tools during use.

SCX Special Projects has extensive experience with large mast assemblies, stemming from creating high-integrity masts for use in nuclear decommissioning applications, as well as experience in building maintenance units with horizontal booms of up to 32m in length.

We can develop vertical or horizontal mast assemblies, or approach and lift solutions in any orientation, in order to manipulate loads and tools whilst accessing work spaces, wherever they may be located. Our nuclear masts can encompass multi-directional movement, repeatable positioning, and enhanced safety features, including independent recovery in all directions, and dual and diverse actuation.

Solid Masts

Where headroom is no issue, single-stage solid masts provide a cost-effective alternative to the more expensive multi-stage telescopic masts. For a lightweight solution. lattice truss masts are the way to go, alternatively, a heavier weight, enclosed-formed truss prevents debris entering the mast internals if this is a concern within the operational environment.

Telescopic Masts

Telescopic masts are Ideally suited where limited headroom or surrounding space is an issue, as multi-stage telescopic nuclear masts can be engineered to allow the operator to choose which section to deploy, for example to facilitate full wash-down. Alternatively, if section deployment order is not a concern, simpler gravity-fed hoist mechanisms provide a more cost-effective solution.

Demolition Masts vs Precision Task Masts

For demolition applications, masts need to be strong, durable and able to operate at higher speeds. SCX Special Projects will design a solution that will provide the necessary exertion, within a supporting gantry structure capable of withstanding the reaction forces.

In contrast, masts that undertake precision tasks require a higher level of fine control, so are generally engineered to operate at a much slower, controlled speed.

Drive System Options

The means by which a mast is driven varies, depending on the application.

  • Rack and pinion-driven systems can provide high positional accuracy and a positive-drive solution.
  • Hydraulic systems are able to withstand higher forces, albeit at slower speeds, and provide a solution where electrics are not feasible.
  • Chain hoist and pulley systems provide a cost effective solution.
  • Hybrid systems utilise a combination of two different methods, most often using a chain hoist as a recovery system.
