Wimbledon Success: 3rd Year Running

08th July 2011

SCX Special Projects’ retractable roof at Wimbledon Centre Court has once again proved a huge success at keeping the world’s top tennis players on court and out of reach of the elements.

The 2011 Wimbledon Championships saw a host of erratic British weather, but not inside Centre Court, where the players and spectators were protected from both heavy rain and blistering sunshine by this year’s further improved roof control capabilities.

The roof was upgraded this year to provide the maximum range of sunshade positions. Any number of the 10 huge trusses can now be deployed at any time to provide optimum shade or sunshine, dependant on how requirements change with the position of the sun or the whim of the British rainclouds. Then from any of these positions, the roof can be fully opened or closed at the touch of a button. And this year it proved to be a valuable new feature, with the roof being fully deployed and later retracted on most days, and the sunshade options being utilised many more times in between.

As with every year, SCX Special Projects’ engineers were on hand throughout the tournament to monitor and maintain the roof, ensuring that it continued to operate smoothly and effectively at all times throughout the tournament.

Routine maintenance will be undertaken throughout the year to ensure the home of British tennis is ready for the 2012 Championships.
