As a part of this growth plan SCX Special Projects is currently looking for ten new members of its engineering, operations and HR teams. The teams will continue to grow over the next few years.


Job Summary

This role will enhance the existing SCX Special Projects control systems design, build, testing and commissioning activities in order to deliver best in class designs and operational excellence to our clients. The role will require collaborative working with all departments within Special Projects to improve efficiencies across the system build, testing and commissioning elements of our works.

Many of SCX's crane and moving structure control systems are complex and include PLC/HMI/VSD equipment and as such the role requires experience and technical competence in these areas.

Working as part of the Control System Design Department, provide the EC&I workshop and site resource during the installation and commissioning phases of a project plus on-going routine electrical maintenance of the control systems.

The role will include technical support activities followed by the workshop and site based electrical works required to install, commission and maintain cranes/moving structures etc.


About You 


  • Previous experience in the installation and testing of electrical control systems PLC/HMI literate to enable testing, commissioning and fault finding using programming laptop

  • Familiarity with safe systems of work, permit systems etc and knowledge of Health and Safety Legislation

  • Knowledge of Electrical Wiring Regulations

  • Conversant with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint etc.)

  • This role includes the need to work away during our site testing and commissioning activities.



  • Knowledge of Machinery Safety Regulations (BS EN 13849-1)

  • Hold current 18th Edition Wiring Regulations certification

  • Knowledge of control system instrumentation such as Laser Positioning systems, position and speed encoders, safe access systems

  • Knowledge and experience of Overhead Electrical Travelling Cranes (OHETCs)

Main Duties and Responsibilities

Office Based

  • Support the control system design team in the specification and integration of the electrical field devices into the overall control system
  • As part of the design team assist with the generation of EC&I documentation including but not limited to:
  • Cable Block Diagrams
  • Cable Schedules
  • Cable containment information
  • EC&I/Mechanical interface information/drawings
  • Functional Design Specifications
  • Software Design Specifications
  • Generate Control System Testing and Commissioning Schedules
  • Generate Control System Site Acceptance Test Procedures
  • Produce Risk Assessment and Method Statements to cover site activities


Site Based (SCX Build premises and customer sites)


  • Carry out electrical control system installation and integration works, as required by the contract
  • Verify the control system elements of the installation works, have been installed in compliance with the approved design documentation
  • Set up/configure any Variable Speed Drives included within the control system
  • Carry out any electrical fault finding activities required during testing and commissioning works.
  • Carry out control system electrical testing activities from cable testing in order to provide cable test certifications, initial power up tests through to final testing and commissioning tests, in line with the control system test and commissioning schedules
  • Carry out functional testing of the control system and any other Setting to Works activities prior to Factory Acceptance Testing works
  • Carry out Factory Acceptance Testing in line with the FAT documentation for the projects
  • Support the overall Site Project Manager in delivering the electrical / mechanical installation, testing and commissioning activities of the crane/moving structure, including the completion of Reports of Thorough Examination (where appropriate) for final handover to client
  • Carry out Site Acceptance Testing, with the client, in line with the control system SAT procedures
  • Produce Reactive Risk Assessment and Method Statements to cover any changes to site conditions as the installation and testing works progresses
  • Carry out Planned Preventative Maintenance (PPM) and identify potential electrical or control system problems
  • Carry out project modernisation work related to crane/moving structure conversion or refurbishment
  • To attend breakdowns, identify faults and carry out effective repairs
  • Health and safety objectives must be satisfied at all times whether activities are taking place in the office, workshop or on site. Risk Assessments, Method Statements and Health and Safety Plans must be complied with at all times
  • Follow quality control objectives as laid out in the SCX Quality Manual. All relevant Procedures must be followed to ensure Customer Satisfaction and achievement of SCX objectives
