SCX lifts national Special Achievement award

29th June 2018

Sheffield specialist engineering group SCX has lifted its biggest ever prize thanks to its innovation, investment and “exceptional growth story” – a national Made In The UK award.

The company behind the pioneering sliding pitch at Tottenham Hotspur’s new stadium and retractable roofs at two Wimbledon tennis courts triumphed at a prestigious ceremony in Liverpool.

It won the Special Achievement Award at the Insider Made In The UK ceremony, attended by representatives of the country’s most innovative and successful manufacturers, ranging from SMEs to multi-nationals.

Insider Media editorial director Miri Thomas explains why the “very special award” was given to SCX.

“We wanted to recognise a company that makes many contributions to the manufacturing excellence of the region, not only in its work for customers, but in its growth and innovation, its investment in new premises, investment into new talent, and raising the global profile of its home city of Sheffield.

"SCX has almost doubled turnover and more than doubled profits since 2016. With a portfolio that includes the retractable roof over Wimbledon Centre Court, the contract for a second retractable roof over No.1 Court, the construction and installation of the world’s first dividing retractable pitch at Tottenham Hotspur’s new stadium, plus the removable racetrack at Royal Ascot, SCX has a track record of delivering large-scale innovative moving structures."

SCX managing director Simon Eastwood said:

“We are absolutely overwhelmed. This is our biggest honour in the 45-year history of the group and underlines once again the expertise, experience and commitment of our workforce across all our sectors.

“A couple of months ago we won two Made In Sheffield awards in our home city, which we are very proud of, and now we have this Made In The UK award on the national stage.  It’s fantastic.”

The Sheffield company was also on the shortlist for Manufacturer of the Year (over £25m) and for the Manufacturing Innovation Award at the Insider conference and awards dinner at Liverpool’s Titanic Hotel.

SCX – a leading engineering group specialising in mechanical handling, moving structures, overhead lifting equipment and electrical controls – has now scooped five awards in eight months.

The latest accolade follows on from the group being named Medium Business of the Year in the Yorkshire Business Masters Awards last April.

On the same evening, it won the Innovation category at the Made in Sheffield Awards before being presented with the overall Made in Sheffield ‘Champion’ award.

The group is fast gaining an international reputation, especially through its SCX Special Projects division. This business plays a key role in groundbreaking projects such as the design, manufacture and installation of retractable concertina-style roofs for the two courts at the All English Tennis Club at Wimbledon and the world’s first dividing retractable grass pitch for Tottenham Hotspur’s new stadium, which is due to see its first action in the 2018/19 Premier League season.

The group has over 160 employees across three divisions - bespoke precision engineering arm SCX Special Projects, crane servicing and repair firm Street CraneXpress and Burnand XH, which specialises in electronic, electrical, electromechanical and pneumatic control components.

Based in Wincobank, Sheffield, SCX’s expertise is now being harnessed in sectors as diverse as nuclear, defence, aerospace, energy, architecture, stadia and manufacturing.
