The Senior Control Systems Design Engineer will enhance the existing control system department in order to deliver best in class designs and operational excellence to our clients.
The role will focus on the hardware design and validation of control systems and associated field equipment which will include PLCs, VSDs, Safety circuits and intelligent sensors, but experience of generating PLC/HMI software would be advantageous.
Understand the customer specification and individual project control system requirements in order to be able to identify/clarify any contract scope of supply issues
Where variations to contract are identified, provide technical and commercial justifications for the changes to the Project Manager
Working to the Project Program to ensure allocated work milestones for the control system design and supply elements of the contract are achieved
Health & Safety objectives must be satisfied at all times whether activities are taking place in the office, workshop or on site
Produce Basis of Design Specifications (BoD) for review with the Controls Dept Manager and contract Project Manager and/or client for comment/approval before the electrical design commences
Produce a Functional Design Specification (FDS) for the contract and keep updated as the control system design develops such that the FDS can be used as a design verification document
Produce Design Substantiation Reports (DSR) to demonstrate the validation of the design documentation
Produce Electrical Schematic drawings using AutoCAD Electrical drawing package
Produce panel general arrangement drawings using AutoCAD Electrical drawing package
Generate electrical Cable Block Diagrams and cable schedules for the electrical equipment to be installed
Produce electrical cabling sizing calculations to determine size and number of cores for cables to be installed
Facilitate and contribute to multidisciplinary Design Risk Assessments in line with BS 12100
Peer review and verify control system designs/documents generated by departmental colleagues meet client specifications and internal Design Risk Assessments
Working with mechanical design engineers, ensure the electrical equipment is integrated into the overall design of the crane/moving structure
Mentor and develop junior members of the EC&I department
Produce other technical documentation in line with contract requirements, typically, but not limited to:
Bill of Materials
Software design Specifications
Electrical Power Load calculations
Control Panel Heat calculations
Equipment Schedules
Factory Acceptance Testing documents
Site Acceptance Testing documents
Take responsibility for the selection of EC&I equipment to be used
Liaise with manufacturing and procurement personnel to ensure efficient and cost-effective purchasing of EC&I equipment
Follow SCX Special Projects QA procedures to ensure all control system works is designed and supplied to the requisite technical quality standards
Oversee and manage the electrical installation works for those contracts built and tested at our Assembly and Test Facility
Carry out all Setting to Works Testing at SCX workshops prior to formal client witness testing
Carry out control system testing, commissioning and customer Factory Acceptance Testing at our Assembly and Test Facility
Carry out control system testing, commissioning, and customer Site Acceptance Testing on client sites
Manage and provide technical assistance to workshop based resource during the build of SCX system designs/projects
Essential
Experience in the hardware design of electrical control systems and the generation of required design documentation
Ability to generate electrical schematic and GA drawings using AutoCad Electrical package.
Knowledge of Machinery Safety Design and Regulations (BS 13849-1) and use of SYSTEMA machine safety verification package
Knowledge of Variable Speed Drives
Knowledge of 18th Edition Electrical Wiring Regulations
A full UK driving licence is essential for this position as travelling between offices/sites may be required
Up to date knowledge of current Health and Safety Legislation including CDM Regulations
Desirable
Knowledge and experience of Overhead Electrical Travelling Cranes (OHETCs)
Knowledge of leading PLC/HMI suppliers (e.g. Siemens, Rockwell, Group Schneider)
Knowledge of Functional Safety Design and Regulations (BS EN 61508, BS EN 62061)
PLC/HMI programming skills
Knowledge of Amtech cable calculation package
Knowledge of control system instrumentation such as Laser Positioning systems, position and speed encoders, safe access systems
