Decades of mechanical handling and lifting experience

SCX Special Projects has a history stretching back to the early 1970s, when a new crane servicing division of Street Crane company was established, called Street CraneXpress.

That heritage, and the SCX initials, live on in our company name to this day.


The crane servicing division of Street Crane Company is established in 1972, under the name Street CraneXpress. This gave the initials SCX that remain in our company name to this day.


The original premises are soon outgrown and, in 1978, the business moves on to a site at Roman Ridge Road in Wincobank, Sheffield. Our headquarters are still on the same site today.


The business acquires Crane & Hoist Ltd, a supplier of hoist units, cranes, gantries, slings and other lifting equipment, and giving a boost to SCX's mechanical handling knowledge.


Andy Whitworth joins SCX with a brief to win more complex, technically-biased mechanical handling contracts. Andy's 'special projects' team became SCX Special Projects Ltd, and Andy now leads the business as CEO.


A new venture into building maintenance units and access solutions results in the completion of successful and complex projects for the Beijing Botanical Gardens and the Swiss Re's 'The Gherkin'.


The Royal Navy commissions a series of bespoke on-board cranes from SCX Special Projects for its HMS Ark Royal, HMS Invincible and HMS Illustrious warships.


SCX Special Projects delivers an advanced production line handling solution for the manufacture of F-35 Lightning jets.


SCX Special Projects designs, builds and installs the concertina roof over Centre Court at Wimbledon. We have maintained the roof ever since, ensuring more than a decade of rain-free tennis action.


The company designs and delivers a retractable seating solution for the Wembley football stadium, giving the venue additional seating capacity for its famous music concerts.


Two key appointments create a brand new EC&I department within SCX Special Projects, adding a control and automation capability to the company's well-established mechanical engineering and design teams.


A contract is secured to deliver semi-automated nuclear decommissioning cranes for the Dounreay nuclear power station, in addition to a fuel crane refurbishment project at the Sizewell B plant.


The world's first dividing retractable football pitch, engineered and installed by SCX Special Projects, is used for the first time in a Premier League game. A few months later, SCX Special Projects revealed a second concertina roof at Wimbledon, this time over No.1 Court.

And in December 2019, in a fitting end to a tremendous year, SCX Special Projects won the prestigious Lloyds Bank National Business Award for Innovation.


In February 2020, in a combination of external and senior management investment, SCX Special Projects leaves the SCX group to become part of the Elysian Capital portfolio.
